When the Alabama defeated the Union man-o'-war Hatteras off the Texas
coast on 1/11/1863, a group of southern sympathizers in Inyo County, CA
named a range of hills for the Confederate ship. The Alabama Hills are
still on the map.
(When the Kearsarge sank the Alabama it also became a California
mountain: see 6/19/1864)
