Happy Birthday!
(Theobald) Wolfe Tone
(b1/20/1763 - d11/19/1798)
Protestant Dublin
barrister who together with Napper Tandy (see 8/24) helped to found the
United Irishmen in the 1790s and played a major role in the 1798
Rebellion. He was caught by the British while trying to "liberate" a
French ship and sentenced to death in Dublin. He was refused a soldier's
execution & rather than be hanged, he took a razor to his own throat.
Well they fought for dear old Ireland, and full bitter was their fate,
Oh what glorious pride and sorrow fills the name of ninety-eight.
But thank God e'en now are beating hearts in mankind's burning noon,
Who will follow in their footsteps, at the rising of the moon.
"Rising Of The Moon"
[BTW, yesterday was Bertram Wolfe's birthday (1/19/1896 - d1977.) You
know him, the guy that established the US Communist Party. I don't know
if Wolfe & Wolfe were related. Anyway, I don't have any songs about Bert
Wolfe so I didn't mention anything about it.]
