In the gale of 2/8-9/1889, up to 15 boats and 70 to 80 men of the Grimsby
& Hull fleets were lost.
And it's three score and ten, boys and men,
Were lost from Grimsby town;
From Yarmouth down to Scarsborough
Many hundreds more were drowned.
Our herring craft, our trawlers,
Our fishing smacks as well;
They longed to fight that bitter night
To battle with the swell.
"Three Score and Ten," (Dubliners, MacColl, many)
[This is a rare exception to the official rules governing
postings. Instead of the "true" date ("October") in verse 3 of the song,
I've posted on the "factual" date of the disaster, per Oxford Book of Sea
Songs, Palmer]
