"The Sailor's Friend,"
Sam Plimsoll
b2/10/1824 (dJune 3, 1889):
Honour to Plimsoll, his labour will save
Thousands of brave men from watery graves.
"The Unseaworthy Ship," Oxford Book of sea Songs, Palmer.
The Plimsoll line was part of the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876 which he
had forced through Parliament in several years' battle against the
pressures of ship owners' lobbying. He was a great popular figure & was
offered a seat in Parliament by some 30 constituencies - but refused to
run.
