Happy Birthday!
Sam Houston
b3/2/1793 (d7/26/1863)
There was an 'eifer lived in the medder, [meadow]
Houston, Sam Houston [pronounced "hooston"]
There was, etc.
A long time ago.
Chorus:
It was a long time ago-o-o,
A long time ago-o-o,
There was an 'eifer lived in the medder,
A long time ago.
There was a fence around that medder, etc.
A big black bull came down from the mountain,
He jumped that fence and he oofed that 'eifer,
He missed his mark and he phttt in the medder, [a sound, not a euph.]
The big black bull went back to the mountain,
His head hung low but his balls hung lower,
"Sam Houston," [thanx Cyril Tawney]
To be sung in maximum English mock-rustic styling & accent.
I was sure there was a version in DigTrad, but I can't find it. This is a
very well-known song in its many guises. Other common titles include:
"The little brown bull," "The Little Black Bull," "Hoosen Johnny," (One
of the few bawdy songs in the mandatory Folk Singers Workbook) some
versions of "A Long Time Ago."
