Happy Birthday!
Anthony Comstock
born 3/7/1844 (d9/21/15)
Comstock led a crusade against
obscenity in literature and in other forms of expression. In 1873 he
founded the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice with which he was
responsible for the destruction of 160 tons of literature and pictures.
He also secured stricter U.S. postal laws against obscene materials. (Look
up Comstock Laws some day - happily, all - or nearly all - are finally
gone.)
Smut, give me smut and nothing but, a dirty novel I can't shut
If it's uncut, and unsubtle
I've never quibbled, if it was ribald,
I have devoured where others merely nibbled,
And as the judge remarked the day that he acquitted my Aunt Hortense,
To be smut it must be utterly without redeeming social importance.
Pornographic pictures I adore, indecent magazines galore,
I like them more, if they're hard-core.
