3/12/1812: per The Aberdeen Journal, The Diamond
sailed for the Davis Straits.
The Diamond was a ship brave boys, for Davis Straits was bound,
And the quay it was all garnish-ed with pretty girls around;
Where Captain Gibbons gave command to cross the mountains high,
Where the sun it never sets, brave boys, nor darkness in the sky.
"The Diamond Ship," Greig-Duncan FS Coll, #11
The Diamond
sailed out of Aberdeen from 1812 to 1819 when she was lost in the ice (no
crew losses) Capt Gibbon was only on board that one year, 1812. MacColl
does this song rather well.
