Turlough O'Carolan Memorial Day

3/25/1738: Death of harpist/composer/planxtist Turlough O'Carolan @~68.

Now, I've been wondering for some time - & according to William Stevens' good biography, http://www.musicman.com/ag/tocbio.html:

"Carolan's actual name in Irish was Toirdhealbhach o Cearbhallain. His first name is usually rendered in English as Turlough, though the name Terence is sometimes used. The O' before the last name is only used when the full name is used, so it's Turlough O'Carolan, or Carolan for short."

Now that makes sense, except that Mr Stevens links to other Carolan pages where the two forms are used interchangeably, regardless of "long" or "short" and sometimes within the same paragraph. Maybe it's something Irish?
