Pete Seeger, summoned before the HUAC neither testifies nor cites the 5th
amendment 8/16/55.
Which shows that courage & integrity can prevail, but like freedom,
itself, there can be a cost.
Although now an official National (something) bemedaled by no less than
the president, Seeger's honor in 1955 embroiled him in 7 years of
vindictive litigation.
As I put together the main sequence (don't take any bar bets though)
- indicted for contempt of Congress 3/26/57
- trial doesn't begin until 3/27/61
- is sentenced to a year and a day on 4/3/61
- quashed by US Court of Appeals in re "faulty indictment" 5/18/62
Action dropped at that point.
