Happy Birthday!

Freddie King

was born on
9/3/34 {or maybe 9/30}
in Gilmer, TX
(d12/28/76)

King was one of spearheads of Chicago blues & good. I went to a concert in black Chicago (by that I just mean I was the only white there - this had the great advantage that the music was not the "white audience - TV - Festival" adaptation Chicago blues people affected outside Chicago, but rather that preferred by Chicago black audiences. It's noticeably different and I much prefer the Chicago/black style. It was always frustrating to me to go to a gig in New York or Philadelphia by a Chicago bluesist & never hear Chicago blues. Even when I would request a specific song I knew to be in the artist's repertoire. I don't protest this - the artist has to make a living and part of that is his own judgement of what will go down in the specific venue - I just didn't get to hear the music I personally preferred. It's kind of like getting genuine Indian extra-hot authentic curry "prepared for the Scottish pallet.")

What was I saying? Oh yeah... King shared the gig with B.B. King. B.B. introduced Freddie as his cousin. I took it at face value and never got the joke until http://www.surfin.com/TheBlueFlameCafe let us know that Freddie King was born Freddie Christian, and was no relation to any of the other blues guitarists named King.
