10/1/1894: A huricane sweeps Sand Island, at Panama City, FL & swamps the
fishing fleet & kills much of the local male population.
'Twas the year '94 on an October day
They sailed from their homes on the shores of East Bay.
Not a thought of their fate as the farewell they say
As each kissed some loved one and sailed from the Bay.
"The Lost Boys Of East Bay," Written by Harry Evans in 1894 & collected 60
years later by AC Morris, Folksongs of Florida. A rare example of an
indigenous Florida song. Most, like the people, are transplants.
