Happy Commemoration of
St. Hubert Day!
(d.11/3/727)
Bishop of Liège from 721, patron of hunters & dogs
There are so many fine hunting songs, it's hard to choose:
I always will remember,
'Twas a year ago November,
I went out to hunt some deer
On a morning bright and clear.
I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow,
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.
"Hunting Song," Tom Lehrer
But it should be noted that your humble editor will probably drift down to
the Sunday night folk club tonight (Sunday.) A couple of weeks ago an
honored member let it be known he was off to the far north (Georgia, I
believe) to do some deer hunting. Or to "murder Bambi" as others put it.
In quickly thinking through the dead deer songs we know, we could only
think of Johnnie o' Braidisley (Child #114) a superb song, but they don't
let us sing Scots ballads. As soon we left, however, we felt awful. We
realized that a severe lack of Political Correctness was exhibited.
Instead of condoning such vicious slaughter, we should have suggested a
kinder, gentler approach to dealing with our animal friends, particularly
with the dear deer family, (Cervidae.) So tonight, if we get there, we'll
sing the "Moose Song." See DigTrad filename[ ILKMOOSE.
