Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic
b11/6/1787 (d2/6/1864)
Language scholar and the
father of Serbian folk-literature scholarship, who, in reforming the
Cyrillic alphabet for Serbian usage, created one of the simplest and most
scientific and logical spelling systems.
Another of our many folkie-activists, Karadzic was engaged as writer and
reader of letters to the commander of the insurgents of his district at
the beginning of the first Serbian rising against the Turks in 1804. He
also served during the first revolution (1804-13). His collecting may be
found in Srpske narodne pjesme (1823-33)("Serbian Folk Poems") & also in
other stuff.
