John Butterfield
b11/18/1801 (d11/14/1869)
With Wells & Fargo he founded
American Express in 1850 and the Overland Mail Co. in 1857. He won the
government contract to carry mail from St. Louis to San Francisco and the
first such arrived in San Francisco 10/10/1858.
The dear john letter was then became possible out west.
As was rambling around one day all down on the public square
The mail coach had arrived, and I met the mail-boy there
He handed to me a letter, that gave me to understand
That the girl I left in old Texas had married another man.
