Per AC Morris, Folksongs of Florida, Mr. Graham West, comptroller for
Atlanta wrote: "On December 15, 1921, Frank Dupree entered a jewelry store
in Atlanta and snatched a diamond ring and, in his attempt to escape, he
killed a policeman. He then ran down the street and into a hotel lobby. I
was coming out of the hotel at the same time and, evidently, someone
attempted to stop Dupree and he shot me twice - once through the head and
once through the shoulder. After several weeks in the hospital I
recovered. Dupree escaped and, after a chase through several states, was
captured in Detroit, Michigan."
On Sept 1, 1922, Dupree became the last man in Georgia to be hanged.
He got himself a pistol
And it was a forty-four; (2)
Well, you know to get that diamond ring,
He had to rob a jewelry store.
