Singer/songwriter Seba Smith read the New York Observer on 2/8/1840 and
caught the following: "A young woman, whose name is given as Miss_____,
was frozen to death while riding twenty miles to a ball on the eve of
January 1, 1840."
His song, "Young Charlotte," went instantly into tradition in Vermont and
was extended & carried to Morman tradition by "The blind Homer of Benson,
Vermont," WL Carter.
They reach the tavern,Charles jumps out and holds his arms to her;
"My darling, here at last," he said. Poor Charlotte did not stir.
He called in tender words and low, she answered not a word;
He sprang into the sleigh again but Charlotte never stirred.
